Students Will Determine Their Own Letter Grades for the Semester

Once again, students will determine their own letter grades for the 2nd semester of English.  Students will be asked to submit their grade to me by Friday and then submit their reasoning on the same sheet (time provided in class).  I will then look at their reasonings as we determine what their final grade should be.  The criteria will be as follows:

To get an “A” student has:
  • Received mostly 3.5’s or 4’s throughout the two quarters on all summatives
  • Done all re-takes needed to show mastery of content
  • Completed the 25 book challenge (or personal book challenge goal met)
  • Participated in classroom discussion to help support learning of others
  • Shows a deep level of understanding of work covered and has used this knowledge to support the learning of others

To get a “B” student has:
  • Received mostly 3’s or 3.5;s throughout the two quarters on all summatives
  • Done almost all re-takes needed to show mastery or content
  • Has read at least 15-20 books for the 25 book challenge or actively read outside of English class 5 out of 7 days a week
  • Participated in classroom discussion/learning to show content understanding

To get a “C” student has:
  • Received mostly 3’s or 2.5’s throughout the two quarters on all summatives
  • Done some re-takes needed to show mastery of content
  • Has read 10 books to 15 books of the 25 book challenge or actively read outside of English class for 3 or 4 days out of 7 a week
  • Participated occasionally in classroom discussion/learning to show content understanding

To get a “D” student has:
  • Received mostly 2’s or lower and done few re-takes to show mastery of content
  • Has read less than 10 books total for the 25 book challenge
  • Limited participation in classroom discussion/learning to show content understanding
