Video Newsletter May 30th, 2014

Another great peak into our classroom courtesy of some of our boys.

Skyping All Day!

Now we are doing our 2nd Mystery Skype of the day... Here we go! The Skype started at 10:41, and we are going strong. So far we are doing better! A bit of question confusion but nothing compared to last time. Now they are having some question issues. There state starts with a vowel! So far, they are in the US, they are east of the Mississippi, and they do not border an ocean. We are being more cheerful. They are very organized as well. The Questioners are again have trouble. We are slowing down, but are still strong. They border a great lake! We are in the same region, or so it seems. I believe they are getting close already.
Our capitol is not Lansing. And now, they are sure! They are sure having question luck- everyone is yes! There state does not start with a I! And now they live in Ohio! An 8 minute Skype! Wow! It is there last day of school in Ohio. We are jealous! They were such a cheerful class... This one was definitely better and quicker! We would get confused about who goes next, but overall still a great Skype! Our supervisor did a great job with helping us. We always start out with talking with what we should have done better and one of our main problems was other people doing others jobs. But we got there state which was Ohio and they found our state quickly after. We definitely improved from the other one this morning but we still can improve in places. We will improve and get more organized and we will try our best like we always try too.

A Mysterious Skype

Today we are unexpectedly doing 2 mystery Skype's- the first one is going on right now. We started out strong with a good question- Do you live in the USA? We are having sound difficulties but we were doing good, until we had a fire drill during the middle of the Skype! It was very confusing, and it made us very jittery. Now we are getting confused, but are slowly pulling it back together. Right now, I feel bad for the other class because our class is really making it difficult! We are also doing other peoples jobs- now, do we want that? However, the fire drill keeps going off so we are confused as well! We are getting some deep questions in. They just asked if we live in the Midwest Region- Yes! And we have figured out that they border an ocean and they live East of the Mississippi River. They do not live in the Northern Part of the USA. The fire drill is going off again... We are having problems with whose turn it is, we are now on a roll. Our state does not start with a vowel. They live in one of the Thirteen colonies! We are narrowing it down minute by minute... Its getting juicy up here... And now we border lake superior! Both are very close... They have 2 words in their state name. They just guessed us! And now, can we guess them??? I think its either South Carolina or North... Its North! Yay!!! A very hard, and strong Skype... They guessed ours first, but we were right on our tails. This was definitely one of our worst Skypes, (don't blame the fire drill) but we will get back up and try again! After our conversation on the carpet was a huge reflection because we have another chance to fix it later! We all hope to turn it around. Stay tuned for another blog about our next Skype later today!

After the Zombie Apocalypse - Creation of a Constitution and Government

You survived the zombie apocalypse, but society has been destroyed.  The government has ceased to exist and general mayhem threatens to take over if you don’t do something and fast!  Your task is to create a new government and write a new constitution.

One big thing: the zombie virus has mutated and zombies are no longer on the attack but wish to live peacefully in this new nation. Are you willing to give them rights? How will you communicate with them?

  • There is no internet as most power grids have been destroyed meaning little electricity
  • There are no cell phones or phones either
  • Rival groups are fighting for control - how will you bring them together?
  • You need to hold an election - how will you do this?

Government & Constitution - Major things to decide:
  • What type of government will you create?
  • Who will hold the power?
  • Will the people (you) have a say?
  • Where will the government be?
  • How will it make decisions?
  • Who will enforce decisions and how?
  • How will you make sure these rules will work in a 100 years?
  • What rights do people have?
  • How do you share power to decide the rules?
  • How will you make sure a person doesn't take all of the power?
  • How are people’s rights protected?

  • A written constitution
  • A presentation explaining what your new government looks like and how it works

You will have two to three weeks to create your Constitution as well as a presentation to share your new government.  You decide the format.
Good luck!

  • We have started fantasy stories, students have to turn in their synopsis (3-4 sentences) of what their story will be about on Monday.
  • Some students are not putting in the effort needed for the weekly spelling challenge, thus letting their team down.  These students will be offered an alternative spelling program starting next week.
  • Sub all day, Mrs. Davies, on Tuesday, May 20th
  • Mrs. Ripp Room Talent Show will be June 5th, details were sent home in Friday folders today
  • Thank you so much for all of the cards and gifts for teacher appreciation week.  I hope you know how much I love teaching and being with these wonderful students every day.
  • Sub on May 15th from 10:25 to lunch as I go to our assessment meeting
  • Graduation and lock out details will be forthcoming in a few weeks
  • Innovation Day is all day May 23rd

Helpful Hints for the Track Meet

The track meet is this coming Wednesday. the 14th, unless we get rained out.  Based on past years experience, here are some helpful hints:

  • Students should bring several items to drink since there is nothing to buy there!
  • Students should bring snack and lunch in their backpack.  Often students complain they haven’t brought enough food for the entire day.
  • Please make sure your child is here on time, buses leave right at 8:30
  • Students should bring sunscreen and wear layers.  In the past it has been chilly in the morning and then warmer later.  We also have a chance of rain that day so an umbrella, plastic bags to put around their backpack and possibly sit on are all great things to bring.
  • You are welcome to come and watch the events, the schedule of them are on the back of the permission slip or posted on our website.
