Newsletter December 6, 2013

Special Notes
* We finished our holiday cards today and will mail them out on Monday.  We have also started to receive ours in the mail; it is exciting to see where we are connecting with.
*  We need toilet paper tubes!  I have a special challenge for the students next week upon our return from the Overture center.  So if you have empty toilet paper tubes or paper towel tubes, please send them in with your child before next Friday.
* I will be at a technology conference Tuesday and Monday so Mr. Braun will be in the classroom for me.  If you need me, please do not hesitate to email me as I will check my email during the day.  I am excited to get great ideas for the classroom.
* It was great to see so many of you at the Winter Tea; it definitely hit me that this will be the last year of the event for the kids and me.  Weird to think that we will all be at the middle school next year.
*  We are excited to cheer for Kevin, Sydney, Rose, and Aunisa later today as they represent us all in the spelling bee.
*  The geo bee is coming, make sure you start practicing your geography!
* Book orders for December will be sent home next week; I know I have a few favorites picked out for presents.
* I have some dates for you to put on your calendars: Mrs. Ripp out for a conference December 10th and 11th, Nutcracker field trip Friday, December 13th, Pizza lunch on Friday, December 20th, Winter Party Friday, December 20th 2 PM, and winter break is from December 21st through January 1st.

MathWe are working our way through fractions and boy are there a lot of pages to this unit.  We have also restarted fact tests with many students testing out on their first attempt.  To celebrate the end of the fraction unit, we will have pizza for lunch on December 20th.  Please send in $3 with your child to cover pizza and juice.  The test for this unit will be after break.
Science Students created models of the playground and then transferred those to maps as we started our next unit on landforms.  This unit has a lot of vocabulary and we usually end it with a great hands on build project.
Social Studies – Students are finishing their self-led exploration inquiries.  I love the moments in my room where I am not needed because all of the students are so engaged in their project.  Students will present their projects starting Monday and will then be self-assessing along with my evaluation.  They are expected to be able to speak for at least 3 minutes about their topics, but preferably longer
Reading We have been immersed in nonfiction discussion main idea, ways to take notes, and cause and effect.  Students still meet with their partners and have created new reading goals for December.
Writing We were introduced to our next writing unit yesterday, the realistic short story.  Students should pick something they have a little bit of knowledge on and create a story around this.  The maximum word count for the story is 850 words since these will be considered for submission to the Yahara River Writers Contest.
