The Silence Challenge #GRA13

As we prepared to start the book "Out of My Mind" by Sharon Draper for the Global Read Aloud 2013, we knew that the main character Melody could not speak with the world.  On Friday I therefore challenged them to figure out two brainteasers with a partner without speaking or writing.  This video is a few snapshots from that.  I was impressed that many of the students got at least a partial solution to one of the problems.  When we finished I asked the students to blog about it.

Mack said,"We were only allowed to use hand motion's now that probably sounds super easy but trust me it's not at all."

Jack said, "First we tried to  mouth things. Then we tried gestures and it wasn’t pretty."

Bruno said, "My experience with the challenge was hard because my partner and I did not know sign language. We tried mouthing the words and that sorta worked. I only got 1 out of 2 questions right. I would hate to not be able to speak because I like talking."

Alex said, "It was pretty hard to communicating without words or writing words down. I would go insane if I couldn’t  talk to other people I don’t know how Melody can take it. She is really strong minded. "
