Newsletter October 4th, 2013

Special Notes
I hope to see many of you at the dance tonight, Thea and I always have such a great time.
*  The photographer from the State Journal and the reporter were here for 1 ½ hour this week.  I will let you know when the article will run.
*  The students did an incredible job with our guest teacher, Mrs. Johnston, yesterday.  I knew they would so I am excited to share the praise with them today.
*  Please make sure you get those field trip permission slips in as soon as possible.
*  Things to look for in the Friday folder are music club news as well as your child’s weekly reflection on how they are doing.
*  Make sure you check out the website, lots of news, pictures, and videos from the classroom get posted there.
*  October book flyers will go home next week.
*  Mrs. Johnston will be here Monday morning as I head to another doctor appointment for the baby, I will be back for reading.
* Dates for your calendar:  PTO Fall Dance Party Night is Friday, October 4th 6 PM, Family Fun Night/Title 1 Night October 8th 4:30 – 6:45 PM,  Mrs. Ripp sub in PM for literacy meeting Monday, October 14th, Field trip to the Overture October 17th 11:30 to 2 PM,  No school Thursday, October 24th and Friday, October 25th,  Fall/Harvest/Halloween party moved to Friday, November 1st 1 PM,   Picture re-take is Tuesday, November 5th.

Math – We are busy at work adding and subtracting with decimals, making magnitude estimates, working with probability and also discussing data.  Even though the book says to use certain methods we encourage the students to do whichever method they work best with.  The unit test has been moved to next Monday, so the 14th, with the pre-test the following day and then new groups on the 16th.
Social Studies – I loved the zombie presentations and will be uploading them soon to our website so you can view them as well.  Most students did a really nice job.  They have self-evaluated their group work and attitude and will also be evaluating their presenting skills.  We will start with Native Americans in the US next week and then introduce genius hour projects as well.  I cannot wait to see what the students create.
Reading The first week of the global read aloud meant mystery skyping with one of our buddy classrooms in Chicago.  Students have also added their thoughts to our Edmodo groups, as well as added blog posts about the books.  You should be here for the discussions that are happening in class regarding Melody and how others perceive her, quite powerful!  We have also worked a lot on sketching the scenes we see in our heads and envisioning what it must feel like to be another character.
Writing We have been finding what we are passionate about so we can start work on our essays/op.eds.  I love what the students are coming up with and the discussions we are having.  Students also blogged their opinions about the government shutdown on our blogs this week.  Connections we have made this week include with students in Argentina, India, as well as college students in Alabama that have been assigned our Kidblog as homework.  I love the voice these students have to the world.
Science – We are continuing work with our lifeboats and figuring out how capacity plays a role in how many passengers a boat can hold.  Next up will be planes, such a fun investigation!
