Oh What a First Day We Had

What an incredible day of meeting the students and getting started with 5th grade.  We had a lot to do and still a lot more to come, but at the very least we got settled into our seats, our lockers, and started figuring each other out.

Some other highlights from the day:

  • The students choosing "Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed" by Mo Willems as our very first read aloud and then absolutely nailing the message of the book in their first partner discussions.
  • So much kindness shown to each other and to the new students in particular.  Many of the kids went out of their way to be welcoming.
  • Kevin, Nate and Danielle being the first ones that figured out the Bloxes challenge.  This is a super hard first day challenge with impossible instructions, I have videotaped parts of it but cannot post it until I have snagged tech permissions from all parents/guardians.
  • The students showing what being role models is all about: walking right in the hallways, getting to work quickly, having a great time, and taking care of our classroom.
  • All of the wonderful questions, my favorite two of the day:  "Are your hair-braids a Danish thing?  "Is not being able to high-five a Danish thing?"
Tomorrow we will get to know each other even more, start day 2 of the 6 week rotation, listen to another picture book and so much more.  Even though our room is crowded, 27 students are all letting me be their teacher, it is one of my favorite places to be.
