The Spelling Bee is Coming

From Ms. Weber:

Classroom spelling bees will take place before Thanksgiving break and all students who are interested can take place. Students were given information about the spelling bee in the last week, which includes a word list that will be used for our classroom spelling bee.  The top 4 spellers from our classroom will move on to compete in the school spelling bee in December.  The date has not been set for the school spelling bee yet but will be communicated as soon as it is.

If you have any questions about the spelling bee, feel free to contact our Advanced Learning Specialist, Amy Weber, at aweber3@mcpasd.k12.wi.us.

This is a great opportunity for kids to set a goal and work toward it.

Square 1 Art

From Ms. Hyland

Dear Parent,
Coming home to you soon is a school sponsored elementary art project called Square 1 Art.  This company takes your child’s artwork and makes it into great products for you to purchase.  These products are wonderful keepsakes and gifts for family and friends.  Your child has been busy making beautiful artwork that can be made into many fun products such as magnets, t-shirts, mouse pads, ornaments and much more!
The money raised from this school project will enable West Middleton Elementary to continue its efforts in supporting our students.  Some of these efforts include field trips and school sponsored events.  Your help is needed for us to continue offering these opportunities to our school.
Looking Ahead…
  • – Look for your child’s FREE STICKERS with ordering information to come home.  You will be able to see your child’s artwork and ordering information at the top of the Stickers.
  • – All ONLINE ORDERS AND PAPER ORDER FORMS ARE DUE by November 9th.  No late orders will be accepted.
  •  – Product will be delivered December 6-7th.  Watch for future details.
Square 1 Art is a wonderful art project that celebrates your child’s artwork along with helping our school.  A special thank you to Mrs. Hyland for her help creating the artwork with the students.  We couldn’t have done it without you!

Newsletter October 19, 2012

Friday, October 19
       Dear Parents,
Another week has gone by, where has the time gone?
The students are now on their second unit in social studies. They are learning about the early people of America. To help learn the unit I divided the students into groups. Each group took a lesson, learn the concepts and vocabulary and teach it to the rest of the class. The students are doing an excellent job with this. The first group had a video presentation, a taste test of native food (salmon, squash, and fruit salad) and a cooking demonstration. WOW! I am looking forward to the rest of the presentations.
In reading the students are reading their second book. After each chapter they are writing in their composition book something that is called a thoughtful log. The log can consist of any vocabulary words that they thought were interesting, what they thought of a character or characters in the chapter, what they thought of the setting, theme or any connection they might have with that chapter. The idea behind this is to give students the chance to increase their comprehension.
Two major events are happening next week. The first is the WKCE testing. The schedule went home earlier this week. The second is that it is a short week. The students will be dismissed at 11:00 on Wednesday and there will be no school on Thursday or Friday. Because of the testing and the short week the students will not have the Harvest Party on Wednesday. It will be scheduled later in the fall. Have a wonderful weekend.

Square 1 Art (New this year!)
Square 1 Art is a company that turns your child's artwork into custom keepsakes, such as ceramics, jewelry, and clothing, which parents can order for themselves or as gifts. The kids have been hard at work creating their artwork templates with Mrs. Hyland during art class. In the next few weeks, an order form (printed with a picture of your child's artwork) will be coming home. Parents will use this order form to place orders online. Please give the gift of creativity - our school earns a small percentage of each item ordered.

Just for participating in the project, each child will receive free stickers of their individual artwork. Ordered items will arrive at school the first week in December. To learn more, go to square1art.com. Questions: contact Katie Madoch atkatiemadoch@yahoo.com or 630-414-8806.

Dear Parents,
Oh what fun we had! That is the feeling during and after our science unit. It was the unit on Mixtures and Solutions. During the unit the students were able to perform different experiments by finding “mystery “powders, find out what the different definitions of concentration were and take a ‘’fizz quiz.” The look of the students while figuring out the metric system measures while experimenting with Kool-Aid concentrations was priceless! The students also worked with such vocabulary as; solutions, mixtures, saturation and separations.
We will be having a pizza celebration next week. We have many things to celebrate. First we are celebrating how focused and sharp the students are now during specials. (Art, music, technology, gym class. and library) Mrs. Hyland said that the last art class was their best. We are celebrating the first writing that the students have finished. Finally, were are celebrating the fact that all of the students have finished at least one reading book, it’s summary and their reflection of it.
In order to have the pizza party next Friday we would like donations of money of two dollars per student for the pizza, soda, cups and napkins. The party will be on Friday, October 19th. Thank you so much for any and all donations.
       Have a wonderful weekend!

Final Report Card Rubric

This is what students will see as part of their assessment.  4 or Accomplished is not to be equated with an A as these do not line up with letter grades.  To receive a 4 student has to be at a 6th grade level or higher within the particular subject.

Newsletter October 5th

Dear Parents,
“The One and Only Ivan “is our new read aloud. The students have enjoyed reading about a gorilla that lived and performed in a mall in Atlanta, Georgia. The story is from the gorilla’s perspective and is based on a true story. As part of the Global Read Aloud we will connect and soon Skype with a class from California who are reading the same book.  The students have already connected with some of the students from California, and other states through their Edmodo accounts.
The students have finished the first unit in social studies. The focus this year is the history of the United States through the Civil War. The first chapter was on the regions of the United States. The students learned of the five major regions of the U.S. and during the reading we focused on vocabulary as well as the concept of compare and contrast.
       A reminder of the following activities;
October 8- October 11 is School Book Fair
       October 16 is Picture Retake
       Have a wonderful weekend.
